With the amount of time kids spend online, it's so important to teach them about internet safety! We will be spending lots of time on the internet to complete projects throughout the year, and many students will spend even more time on the internet at home. To teach the kids about safety and appropriate use of the internet, I used a few different objects as props to symbolize things they need to remember. Here is what we talked about ...
Padlock: Set strong passwords and set up passcode locks on all digital devices. "Lock 'em down" Commercial |
Toothbrush: Passwords and toothbrushes are very similar in the fact that you NEVER want to share passwords. (However, it is highly encouraged to share passwords with parents!) Commercial |
Sharpie Marker: Everything you put online is permanent...even if you hit the delete button after posting. Odds are someone has retweeted, favorited or taken a screenshot of the material if it was questionable. Commercial |
Toothpaste: Imagine the information that you are putting online is like the toothpaste coming out of a tube. Once it is out, it is almost impossible to get it all back in the tube! Commercial |
Extension cord: Digital devices are great, but it's also important to unplug once in a while and reconnect with the people around you. We don't have to be plugged in all the time! Get outside and be a kid! Commercial |
Mirror: Imagine having the mirror attached to your computer/device. If you looked in it and saw someone in the reflection, would they approve of what you are doing or saying online? Commercial |
Crumpled Piece of Paper: This piece of paper represents someone's heart that has been cyberbullied. We can apologize all we want, but the emotional scars that remain inside DON'T go away. Commercial |
Magnifying Glass: First impressions used to start with a handshake. Now they start with Google. People are using Google to find out information about us. What will show up when someone searches you on Google? Commercial |
Strainer: The amount of information on the internet is amazing! As digital citizens, you have to be good at "straining" out the bad stuff. Decide what is real, what's not and find material that is applicable to your search/use of the internet. Commercial |
Soap: Too many times people are posting, tweeting and retweeting information that is NOT appropriate. Remember to keep it clean! Commercial |
